For Immediate Release MAYOR BOOKER AND CITY COUNCIL PRESENT BRICK CITY SCHOLARSHIPS Top Newark scholars recognized and supported at City Hall ceremony Newark, NJ – August 22, 2008 – Mayor Cory A. Booker and the Newark Municipal Council presented scholarships to ten Newark high school seniors who were named to receive Brick City Scholarships at a City Hall Rotunda ceremony yesterday. The scholarships were awarded to ten seniors who demonstrated resilience in their personal lives and achieved academic success in spite of hardships and challenges. Each recipient receives a $20,000 scholarship ($5,000 per year) to help defray the cost of tuition and other college expenses. The students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 throughout their undergraduate studies at any four-year college or university in the United States. “I am proud and honored to recognize this year’s Brick City Scholarship winners, an exceptional group of young people who have flourished and triumphed in the face of adversity to achieve their goals,” said Mayor Booker during the ceremony. “You are all beacons of light in our communities, and shining examples of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication, and I congratulate you all on a job well done.” “I am inspired by the tremendous talent of the young people in this room, and am honored to be here with you today as you receive the well-deserved recognition for all of your hard work,” said South Ward Council Member Oscar James II, who also served on the committee. “You are truly our finest young minds, and I wish you all much success for the future.” The scholarship fund is a partnership of the City of Newark, the Municipal Council, the Gale Real Estate Services Company, and Praedium Group, who provided a $500,000 donation to the fund in April of last year, and will operate through 2010. The scholarships will be awarded to Newark high school seniors who maintain a cumulative GPA of 70 during their junior year and an average of 80 in their senior year. Applications for this program were made available to Newark high school students during their senior year, starting on April 18. The committee members who reviewed the applications and conducted the interviews are Council Members Ramos and James; Newark Now Executive Director Modia Butler; De’Shawn Wright, Senior Advisor to the Mayor; and Parent Advocate Wilhelmina Holder.
